Heems is the stage name of Himanshu Suri, a rapper and artist who emerged as a significant voice in the landscape of alternative hip-hop. He first came to prominence as one part of the Queens-based rap group Das Racist, known for their eclectic style and intellectual, often irreverent lyrics, with their single "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" putting them on the map in 2008. Following Das Racist's disbandment in 2012, Heems pursued a solo career that has been marked by a blend of sharp social commentary and personal reflection, coupled with his characteristic humor.
Heems' solo work continues the exploration of his identity as an Indian-American and themes of race, cultural fusion, and the immigrant experience that he touched upon with Das Racist. His album "Eat Pray Thug" released in 2015, received critical acclaim for its raw depiction of post-9/11 New York City and the impact of xenophobia on South Asian communities. Heems is not only appreciated for his musical contributions but also for his entrepreneurial spirit, co-founding the Greedhead Music label, which helped launch the careers of several other artists. His recent releases, such as "Sufi La" and "Cashmere"—the latter a collaboration with British actor, rapper, and producer Riz Ahmed under the name Swet Shop Boys—further showcase his evolution as an artist unafraid to tackle complex subject matters with both levity and depth.
