Christina Pluhar is an Austrian theorbist, harpist, and conductor, renowned for her prowess in early music and her innovative approach to historical performance. With a profound passion for the music of the 17th and 18th centuries, Pluhar studied at the Vienna University of Music, the Conservatory of The Hague, and subsequently specialized in the lute with Hopkinson Smith at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Her intellectual curiosity and virtuosity on ancient plucked instruments drove her to explore lesser-known musical landscapes, combining historical accuracy with an innovative, contemporary spirit.
In 2000, Christina Pluhar founded L'Arpeggiata, an ensemble that rapidly garnered critical acclaim for its dynamic renditions of early music, breathing new life into the Baroque and Renaissance repertoire. Under her direction, the ensemble has released numerous albums, including the notable 'Passacalle de la Follie,' 'Alla Napoletana,' and 'Handel goes Wild,' each a testament to Pluhar's commitment to reinvigorating historical pieces with a modern flair. She has a particular affinity for Italian and Mediterranean music, as reflected in her arrangements of pieces like 'Yo soy la locura' or the traditional tarantella 'Lo Guarracino.' Whether it is through exploring the theatricality of Baroque opera, improvising over basso continuo, or collaborating with musicians from various traditions, Pluhar's work transcends time, inviting listeners to experience the visceral passion and beauty of early music with fresh ears.
