Risto Joost

Risto Joost is an Estonian conductor and operatic countertenor born in 1980 in Tallinn. He began his musical journey at a young age and studied conducting, choir direction, and singing at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He furthered his education at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and completed his studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm under Jorma Panula in 2008. Joost has held several prestigious positions, including being the principal conductor of the Estonian National Choir since 2009, the Nederlands Kamerkoor since 2011, and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra since 2013. He was also the artistic director of the MDR Rundfunkchor in Leipzig from 2015 to 2019.

Risto Joost is known for his diverse repertoire, which spans from baroque to contemporary works. He has conducted numerous renowned orchestras and vocal ensembles, including the Helsinki Philharmonic, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and the RIAS Chamber Choir. In recent years, he has been appointed as the artistic director of the Theater Vanemuine in Tartu and, starting from the 2024/25 season, as the music director and chief conductor of the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn. His discography includes works by Sergei Rachmaninoff and Estonian composers like Tõnu Kõrvits, showcasing his versatility in both classical and contemporary music.
