K. V. Narayanaswamy, often referred to as KVN, was one of the most respected and beloved Carnatic vocalists of the 20th century. Known for his clear diction, emotive presentation, and depth of knowledge, he belonged to the sishya parampara (disciplic lineage) of Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, and further honed his skills under the legendary Palghat Mani Iyer and others. KVN was celebrated for his deeply meditative style and his ability to bring out the lyrical beauty of compositions with grace and subtlety.
Throughout his career, he was honored with several prestigious awards, including the title of Sangeetha Kalanidhi from the Madras Music Academy, one of the highest accolades in Carnatic music. His renditions of kritis by composers like Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, and Swathi Thirunal remain benchmarks of classicism and bhava (emotion). KVN also served as a dedicated teacher, mentoring many prominent students who have carried forward his legacy.
