Airto Moreira, known mononymously as Airto, is a Brazilian percussionist and drummer who became a cornerstone of jazz fusion and global music. Born in 1941 in Itaiópolis, Brazil, he grew up immersed in Afro-Brazilian rhythms before carving a path as a sought-after collaborator. His explosive career took off in the late 1960s when he joined Miles Davis’s groundbreaking electric bands, contributing to classics like *Bitches Brew* and helping shape jazz’s fusion era. Airto’s signature blend of Brazilian folk traditions, avant-garde experimentation, and polyrhythmic mastery made him a defining voice, earning him a Grammy® for Best Jazz Fusion Performance in 1995.
Beyond his solo work (like the earthy *Natural Feelings* and *Seeds On the Ground*), Airto is celebrated for his lifelong partnership with vocalist Flora Purim, his wife and frequent collaborator. Together, they’ve infused jazz with Brazilian energy for over five decades, from CTI Records sessions to recent releases like *Cassiopeia* and *Textures: Balkans*. A pioneer of “world music” before the term existed, Airto’s congas, berimbau, and whispered vocal effects remain instantly recognizable—a living bridge between Rio’s samba schools and the cosmic jazz vanguard.
