Joel Hastings was a renowned Canadian-born pianist known for his captivating performances and extensive musical repertoire. Born in Ontario, he spent his childhood in North Bay and Windsor, where he began his musical journey as an organist at All Saint's Church in Windsor. Hastings earned his ARCT diplomas in piano and organ from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, achieving the highest score in the country. He furthered his education at the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Music in organ and later a Master's and DMA in piano.
Hastings' career was marked by numerous achievements, including winning the 2006 International Web Concert Hall Competition and the 1993 International Bach Competition at the Kennedy Center. He was also recognized as the "audience favorite" at the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. His discography includes notable works such as the premiere recording of Carter Pann's "The Piano's 12 Sides," Liszt's vocal work transcriptions, and Roger-Ducasse's piano works. As a Steinway Artist, Hastings performed with various orchestras across North America and Europe, and he taught at several institutions, including Florida State University and the Sichuan Conservatory in China. Sadly, Joel Hastings passed away in May 2016 at the age of 46.
