Banjo music is a string-driven genre rooted in Appalachian folk and early American traditions, defined by the banjo’s bright snap, rolling arpeggios, and rhythmic “clawhammer” pulse. It spans old-time, bluegrass, and progressive “newgrass,” from driving three-finger picking and breakneck instrumentals to earthy, modal ballads and dance tunes. Fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and upright bass often frame the banjo as both timekeeper and lead voice, trading solos and locking into tight ensemble grooves.
