Baroque Singing

Baroque singing is an expressive and ornate style of vocal performance that mirrors the grandeur and intricacy of the Baroque era, spanning from approximately 1600 to 1750. This style is characterized by a unique approach to vocal color, meticulous ornamentation, and an emphasis on emotional delivery that aligns with the historical practices of the period. Artists like Philippe Jaroussky and Andreas Scholl are known for their pure and agile countertenor voices, which are emblematic of the genre, while singers like Lea Desandre bring a mezzo-soprano richness to the repertoire. The technique focuses on clarity, control, and the elegant execution of melismatic passages, often requiring a mastery of breath support and resonant projection to meet the demands of the elaborate, dynamic compositions that define the Baroque musical landscape.
