Bhangra

Bhangra is a vibrant, energetic music genre originating from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. Characterized by its infectious beat, typically in 4/4 time with an emphasis on the second beat, bhangra is driven by the dhol drum and often features a mix of traditional instruments like the tabla, dholak, and tumbi, alongside modern keyboards and synthesizers. Born out of traditional Punjabi folk music, bhangra evolved in the 1970s and 1980s among British-Asian communities, blending with Western influences to create a unique sound. Reaching peak popularity in the 1990s and 2000s, bhangra became a cultural phenomenon, celebrating Punjabi identity and providing a soundtrack for the diaspora. Notable for its dynamic vocal styles, which range from soulful to playful, and its fusion of rural and urban musical elements, bhangra has influenced a range of genres, including hip-hop, electronic, and world music.
