Brega

Brega is a vibrant music genre originating in Northeastern Brazil, characterized by its infectious blend of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, rustic instrumentation, and emotive vocal styles. Emerging in the 1970s, brega evolved from traditional forró and samba styles, incorporating elements of calypso, merengue, and Caribbean music. The genre's heyday in the 1980s and 1990s saw it gain widespread popularity, particularly among working-class communities, who resonated with its raw emotion and storytelling. Brega's distinctive sound is marked by the use of accordion, zabumba drums, and triangle, often accompanied by soulful, raspy vocals and poignant lyrics.
