Corrido is a genre of traditional Mexican music characterized by its fast-paced, polka-inspired rhythms, often featuring a strong emphasis on accordion, bajo sexto, and percussion instrumentation. Emerging in the 1970s, corrido originated in the northwestern region of Mexico, particularly in the states of Chihuahua and Sinaloa, as a form of narrative folk music, typically chronicling stories of everyday life, love, and social issues. During the 1980s and 1990s, corrido gained widespread popularity, with its cultural significance lying in its ability to reflect the experiences and struggles of the Mexican people. Corrido's energetic and danceable style has influenced various genres, including norteño and banda, while its distinctive storytelling tradition sets it apart from other styles. Today, modern corrido has evolved, incorporating elements of hip-hop and contemporary production techniques, while maintaining its roots in traditional Mexican music.
