Fictitious orchestra is a unique musical genre defined by a particular phenomenon: orchestras or conductors that are either completely invented or exaggerated to enhance the allure of classical music recordings. While the actual performances are genuine, the names attached are sometimes pseudonyms, obscure, or less-renowned ensembles given grander titles to appeal to a broader market. The genre often features interpretations of classical repertoire, spreading from baroque to romantic, delivered by artists who are cloaked in mystery or whose real identities remain hidden behind the façade of more illustrious or non-existent entities. This practice, predominantly prevalent before the digital era, aimed to sell more records by associating the music with the prestige of a distinguished orchestra, even if the reality was somewhat more modest.
