Freakbeat

Freakbeat is a musical phenomenon that emerged in the mid-1960s, when British rock bands infused their beat-driven pop with a wild, kinetic energy and experimental edge. It combined the gritty, aggressive sound of garage rock with the mod subculture's love for R&B, psychedelia, and soul, resulting in songs that were at once raw and melodic, adrenalized and artful. Artists often employed fuzz-toned guitars, driving rhythms, and defiant, soulful vocals to create a sound characterized by its intensity and departure from the polish of mainstream pop. While commercial success was limited, freakbeat has since gained a cult following and is prized for its pioneering spirit and its role as a precursor to garage rock and psychedelic rock movements.
