House music is a genre characterized by its upbeat, energetic rhythm, often featuring a prominent kick drum, synthesized leads, and soulful vocals. Emerging in the early 1980s in Chicago's underground club scene, house music evolved from disco and funk, incorporating elements of electronic music and European synth-pop. The genre gained mainstream popularity in the 1990s and 2000s, with the rise of DJs and producers who crafted infectious, dancefloor-friendly tracks. House music played a significant cultural role, providing a soundtrack for the LGBTQ+ community and urban youth. It also influenced the development of various sub-genres, such as deep house, acid house, and tropical house. Distinct from techno and trance, house music is marked by its emphasis on groove, melody, and vocal hooks, making it a staple of modern electronic dance music.
