Mbalax is a dynamic and eclectic music genre originating from Senegal in the 1970s. Characterized by its fast-paced, polyrhythmic beats and fusion of traditional Wolof and Serer musical elements with Western influences, mbalax is marked by its driving sabar drumming, intricate guitar work, and soaring vocal melodies. Emerging as a response to the Afro-Cuban and Afro-American musical traditions that dominated West African airwaves, mbalax drew upon local folklore, modernizing and reinterpreting traditional styles to create a distinctly Senegalese sound.
