Meme Rap

Meme rap is a subgenre of hip-hop characterized by its humorous, ironic, and often absurd lyrical content, frequently referencing internet memes, pop culture, and video games. Musically, it is marked by a laid-back, trap-influenced beat, often featuring bright, cartoonish synths and 808 drums. Emerging in the mid-2010s, meme rap gained popularity on online platforms, particularly on SoundCloud and YouTube, where artists could freely experiment with unconventional styles. The genre's cultural significance lies in its reflection of the internet's impact on contemporary culture, blurring the lines between high and low art. Meme rap's irreverent, tongue-in-cheek approach has drawn comparisons to punk's DIY ethos and the satirical storytelling of hip-hop's early days. Notable for its carefree, humorous approach, meme rap distinguishes itself from more serious, socially conscious rap styles, instead embracing a playful, meme-driven aesthetic that has resonated with a younger, internet-savvy audience.
