Merengue
Merengue is a vibrant, energetic genre of Latin music originating from the Dominican Republic in the 19th century. Characterized by its infectious 2/4 time signature, merengue features a distinctive rhythmic pattern driven by the güira (a metal scraper) and tambora (a double-headed drum). The genre's staple instrumentation also includes the accordion, saxophone, and keyboard, often accompanied by lively, call-and-response vocal styles. Emerging in the 1970s and 1980s, merengue gained widespread popularity, particularly in the Caribbean and Latin America, as a symbol of cultural identity and national pride.
