Christian metal, also known as "white metal" or "metal cristão" in Portuguese-speaking communities, is a music genre characterized by the heavy and powerful sonic attributes of metal music – aggressive guitar riffs, pounding drums, and strong, often operatic vocals – paired with lyrics that promote Christian themes and messages. Imbued with a sense of spirituality and purpose, the themes often touch upon redemption, struggles against sin, and praise for the divine. Despite the typically dark and intense sound palette of metal, Christian metal bands use this vigor to express their faith and inspire listeners. While musically similar to various subgenres of metal including power metal, thrash, and death metal, what sets Christian metal apart is its lyrical focus on Christian ideology and positive affirmations of faith.
