Minnesang

Minnesang is a tradition of lyric and song writing that flourished in medieval Germany between the 12th and 14th centuries, part of the larger phenomenon of courtly love poetry spreading across Europe. Known for its romantic and often chivalric content, Minnesänger (minstrels who performed Minnesang) extolled the virtues of love, with noble sentiments and refined affection toward usually unattainable ladies of the court. Themes of longing, unrequited love, and social obligations were common. The repertoire spans from simple, strophic songs to complex compositions featuring refrains and varying melodies. With performers like Walther von der Vogelweide and Neidhart von Reuental, the music often featured instrumentation such as the fiddle and flute, but the focus remained on the poetic lyrics and their intricate delivery. Contemporary ensembles continue to explore these works, preserving the ethereal and historically significant melodies of this medieval genre.
