Neo-progressive

Neo-progressive music is a genre that emerged in the 1980s, characterized by its blend of complex musical structures, lengthy compositions, and conceptual themes, drawing from 1970s progressive rock. Defining features include intricate instrumentation, often featuring keyboards, guitars, and soaring vocal melodies, with a strong emphasis on musicianship and storytelling. Born from the ashes of classic prog, neo-prog revived the genre's spirit, incorporating new wave and post-punk influences. Popular during the 1980s and 1990s, it maintained a loyal fan base despite commercial decline. Culturally, neo-prog represents a nostalgic longing for the grandeur of 1970s prog, while also pushing boundaries with modern production techniques. Distinct from other prog subgenres, neo-prog often features more accessible, anthemic choruses and a focus on atmospheric, cinematic soundscapes, setting it apart from more experimental or avant-garde styles.
