New beat is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in Belgium in the late 1980s, characterized by its slower tempo, heavy use of synthesizers, and a distinctive mix of acid house, EBM (Electronic Body Music), and industrial music influences. Its sound is often marked by deep basslines, repetitive, hypnotic rhythms, and a somewhat dark, atmospheric aesthetic, drawing from the aggressive beats of EBM and the psychedelic elements of acid house to create a unique, underground dance experience. Artists and groups like Technotronic and Front 242 contributed to the genre by blending these elements with their own signature styles, making new beat not only a precursor to genres like techno and trance but also a distinct scene defined by its innovative soundscapes and moody, danceable tracks.
