Nightcore is a genre characterized by its frenetic tempo, typically between 160-200 BPM, and chipmunk-like vocal pitch-shifting, often applied to existing songs. Emerging in the early 2000s on online platforms, nightcore evolved from the Norwegian DJ duo Thomas S. Nilsen and Håvard Hope's sped-up remixes of trance and eurodance tracks. By the 2010s, nightcore gained popularity worldwide, particularly among young internet users. Culturally, nightcore represents a playful, DIY ethos, often incorporating elements of J-pop, K-pop, and electronic dance music. Its distinctive sound, which can range from euphoric to abrasive, sets it apart from similar hyper-kinetic styles like drum and bass and hardcore techno.
