Powerviolence

Powerviolence is an aggressive offshoot of hardcore punk, characterized by its extreme dissonance, rapid tempos, and a penchant for brevity in song length. It takes the furious pace of thrashcore and infuses it with sludgy breakdowns, noise influences, and a raw, often confrontational, DIY ethos. Lyrics typically grapple with socio-political themes, delivered through shouted or screamed vocals. The genre emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with bands like Man Is The Bastard and Spazz pushing the boundaries of sonic intensity. Powerviolence bands often incorporate elements of grindcore like blast beats and a general sense of chaos while maintaining an underlying thread of punk's rhythmic intensity. The genre's live performances are known for their high-energy and sometimes chaotic nature.
