Psychobilly is a high-energy genre that emerged in the late 1970s, fusing elements of rockabilly, punk, and horror rock. Characterized by its frantic tempo, distorted guitar riffs, and prominent upright bass lines, psychobilly music often features raspy, emotive vocals and a raw, unbridled energy. Born out of the UK's post-punk scene, this genre drew inspiration from 1950s rockabilly and 1960s garage rock, with artists embracing the darker, more macabre aspects of American roots music. Psychobilly's heyday was the 1980s, with its popularity peaking in Europe and the US. Culturally significant for its DIY ethos and anti-establishment stance, psychobilly also drew from the aesthetics of horror movies and pulp fiction, influencing the development of subsequent genres like gothic rock and psychostomp. Notable for its fusion of contrasting styles, psychobilly's unique blend of rockabilly's twang and punk's intensity sets it apart from similar genres, earning its reputation as a rebellious, unapologetic, and infectious musical force.
