Pub Rock

Pub rock is a genre characterized by its raw, energetic sound, often featuring driving rhythms, simple harmonies, and a mix of acoustic and electric instruments. Emerging in the UK in the early 1970s, pub rock drew from roots rock, R&B, and British music hall traditions. Its heyday in the mid-to-late 1970s coincided with a thriving live music scene in London pubs, where artists would showcase their eclectic, genre-bending styles. Pub rock's cultural significance lies in its anti-glam, back-to-basics approach, rejecting the excesses of mainstream rock in favor of a more authentic, down-to-earth sound. With its witty, observational lyrics and eclectic blend of styles, pub rock paved the way for punk, new wave, and British rock's next wave. Notable for its DIY ethos and emphasis on live performance, pub rock remains a beloved and influential genre.
