Ragtime

Ragtime is a musical genre that blossomed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, characterized by its syncopated, or "ragged," rhythm which gives the genre its name. Its melodies are jaunty and often pianistic, reflecting the style's roots in African-American musical traditions fused with European forms, predominantly marches and classical dances. Ragtime is predominantly instrumental, with the piano being its central instrument, though band arrangements exist as well. The left-hand typically plays a steady, march-like rhythm, while the right-hand leaps with syncopated accents, creating the lively and bouncing feel that defines the sound. This genre laid the groundwork for jazz, influencing many early jazz performers. The artists associated with ragtime, like Scott Joplin, Eubie Blake, and Jelly Roll Morton, helped popularize the genre through their dynamic compositions and lively performances.
