Rai

Raï is a vibrant and eclectic music genre originating from Algeria that blends traditional Maghreb sounds with Western influences, featuring both melancholic melodies and upbeat rhythms. It emerged from the port city of Oran and has deep roots in Bedouin desert music, infusing elements of Spanish, French, Arabic, and African musical styles. Raï songs often address social and romantic themes with a candidness that has sometimes stirred controversy. Characterized by the distinctive use of the gasba (a simple flute) and the guellal (a drum), the music is brought to life by the impassioned, plaintive singing of its vocalists.
