Samba

Samba is a vibrant and iconic music genre from Brazil, characterized by infectious Afro-Brazilian rhythms, lilting melodies, and energetic percussion. Emerging in the early 20th century in Rio de Janeiro's Afro-Brazilian communities, samba evolved from traditional African rhythms and European instrumentation, incorporating elements of folk, jazz, and classical music. By the 1930s and 1940s, samba had become a national phenomenon, with its carefree, sensual vibe captivating audiences. Samba's defining features include the use of surdo drums, tambourines, and cuícas, as well as soaring vocal melodies and poetic lyrics often focusing on love, social commentary, and everyday life. With its dynamic fusion of African, European, and indigenous influences, samba has influenced a range of genres, including bossa nova, tropicalia, and MPB (Brazilian popular music). Notable for its improvisational spirit and call-and-response patterns, samba remains a beloved and integral part of Brazilian culture, synonymous with Carnival celebrations and joyful expression.
