Soft rock is a genre characterized by its mellow, laid-back sound, often featuring acoustic instrumentation, lush vocal harmonies, and a focus on melody. Emerging in the 1970s, soft rock evolved from folk, country, and classic rock influences, with artists incorporating elements of jazz, soul, and R&B. The genre reached its peak popularity during the late 1970s to early 1980s, with its polished production and catchy hooks captivating a wide audience. Soft rock played a significant role in shaping adult contemporary music and influencing later genres like yacht rock and easy listening. Distinguished by its emphasis on vocal-driven songcraft, soft rock sets itself apart from its harder-edged rock counterparts, while its blend of folk and pop sensibilities also differentiates it from more experimental or avant-garde styles.
