Techstep is a dark, futuristic subgenre of drum and bass that emerged in the mid-1990s, emphasizing cold, mechanical atmospheres, heavy basslines, and sharp, precise drum programming. It strips away the funk and jazz influences of earlier jungle, replacing them with dystopian sci-fi aesthetics, distorted reese basses, and aggressive, industrial sound design. Drawing from techno and dark ambient influences, techstep often features eerie pads, metallic percussion, and rolling beats that create an intense, driving energy. Modern techstep artists continue to evolve the sound, blending elements of neurofunk and cinematic textures while maintaining its signature gritty, high-energy feel.
