Trio Huasteco, also known as Son Huasteco, is a vibrant and soulful music genre originating from the Huasteca region spread across several states in Northeastern Mexico. Characterized by its emotive and often improvisational style, the genre typically features a trio of musicians playing the violin, the huapanguera (a large five-string guitar), and the jarana huasteca (a smaller eight-string guitar). The music is marked by intricate rhythms, falsetto vocal techniques, and poetic lyrics that often explore themes of love, nature, and the human condition. Trio Huasteco ensembles, such as the noted Trío Chicamole and Dinastía Hidalguense, are celebrated for their lively performances, which include the traditional zapateado dance, where dancers rhythmically tap their feet to the music, adding to the genre's festive and communal atmosphere.
