Musicians within unblack metal adopt the intense and aggressive musical structure synonymous with black metal—including fast tempos, shrieking vocal styles, heavily-distorted guitars playing tremolo-picked riffs, and blast beat drumming—but they lyrically explore themes consistent with Christian theology, striving to offer a message of hope and redemption. Although controversial for juxtaposing black metal's dark soundscapes with Christian-based content, bands such as Antestor and Crimson Moonlight have been instrumental in shaping the genre, intertwining spiritual struggle with the stark and foreboding aesthetic typical of black metal's sound.
