While some, like Black Witchery, encapsulate the genre's aggressive, blasphemous spirit, others, such as Agalloch and Wolves In The Throne Room, incorporate atmospheric, folk, and ambient influences, producing a more avant-garde and introspective sound. Thematically, USBM bands may explore topics ranging from nature and mysticism to nihilism and the occult, all while maintaining the distinct, harsh vocal styling, tremolo picking, and blast beats that define black metal.
