The term, coined by the band Magma, their language's word for "celestial," captures the genre's other-worldly atmosphere, often featuring hypnotic rhythms, repetitive bass lines, complex arrangements, and a theatrical, ritualistic delivery of chanted, declaimed or operatic vocals. The compositions are typically grandiose, with an epic scope that can invoke a sense of space and timelessness.
