Zeuhl

Zeuhl is an avant-garde fusion genre that originated in France during the 1970s, characterized by its experimental blending of progressive rock, modern classical, jazz, and sometimes elements of electronic music. The term, coined by the band Magma, their language's word for "celestial," captures the genre's other-worldly atmosphere, often featuring hypnotic rhythms, repetitive bass lines, complex arrangements, and a theatrical, ritualistic delivery of chanted, declaimed or operatic vocals. The compositions are typically grandiose, with an epic scope that can invoke a sense of space and timelessness. While rooted in rock, zeuhl is notable for its willingness to incorporate dissonance, atonality, and improvisation. Bands associated with zeuhl explore these sonic territories, creating dense, esoteric soundscapes that defy conventional musical structures, offering a mystic, sometimes darkly intense listening experience.
