Lilli Lehmann

Lilli Lehmann (1848–1929) was a powerhouse German soprano and one of opera’s most influential figures during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known for her soaring voice and dramatic intensity, she dazzled audiences in Wagnerian roles like Brünnhilde and Isolde, while also mastering Mozart’s heroines like the Queen of the Night. Her career spanned legendary stages, including Bayreuth Festival and New York’s Metropolitan Opera. Beyond performing, Lehmann became a respected teacher and author—her vocal manual *How to Sing* remains a classic resource for singers even today. Though early recording technology limited her legacy on wax (check out her rare 1906-1907 tracks for a haunting glimpse of her artistry), her impact on opera’s golden age is undeniable. A true diva with brains and bravura!
