Richard Kraus

**Richard Kraus** was a renowned German conductor, born on November 16, 1902, in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of Ernst Kraus, a notable Wagnerian tenor. Richard Kraus studied at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik and began his career as a répétiteur at the Berlin State Opera in 1923. Over the years, he conducted at various opera houses, including those in Kassel, Hannover, Stuttgart, Halle, and Cologne. Notably, he served as the chief conductor of the Städtische Oper Berlin (now Deutsche Oper Berlin) from 1954 to 1961 and later led the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie in Herford from 1963 to 1969. Kraus was particularly admired for his interpretations of Wagner, Mahler, and Richard Strauss.

Kraus's extensive discography includes recordings with prominent artists such as Shura Cherkassky and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He was also known for his powerful performances of operas like *Elektra*, *Macbeth*, *Lohengrin*, and *Parsifal*. Kraus passed away on April 11, 1978, in Kassel, Germany, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most respected conductors of his time.
