The Membranes are a post-punk band originally formed in Blackpool, England, in the late 1970s. Fronted by music journalist and author John Robb, the group became known for their experimental and boundary-pushing sound that blended punk rock, noise, and later, more atmospheric and psychedelic elements. They were an influential part of the DIY underground scene and gained a cult following with their intense live performances and innovative approach to music-making.
After disbanding in the early 1990s, The Membranes reunited in the 2010s and have since released a string of ambitious albums, including Dark Matter/Dark Energy and What Nature Gives... Nature Takes Away. These later releases infuse cosmic and environmental themes, often accompanied by collaborations with choirs and scientists, reflecting the band's continued evolution and intellectual curiosity. Their music remains bold, genre-defying, and deeply engaged with both sound and substance.
