Drill

Drill music is a subgenre of hip-hop characterized by its dark, gritty soundscapes and often, nihilistic lyrics. Emerging in the early 2010s in Chicago's South Side, drill music is marked by its slow, heavy beats, typically between 60-80 BPM, and features prominent use of 808 drums, haunting melodies, and Auto-Tuned vocals. The genre's origins are deeply rooted in the city's street culture, with lyrics often reflecting the harsh realities of poverty, violence, and gang life. Drill music gained widespread popularity around 2012-2015, with its cultural significance lying in its unflinching portrayal of urban life and its influence on contemporary hip-hop. Drill's sound is distinct from other hip-hop subgenres, such as trap, due to its slower tempo and emphasis on atmospheric production. While often associated with gang culture, drill music has also been praised for its raw, emotional honesty, and its ability to provide a voice for marginalized communities.
