Farida Khanum

Farida Khanum, affectionately hailed as the "Malika-e-Ghazal" (Queen of Ghazal), stands among the most celebrated and respected classical singers of the Indian subcontinent. Born in 1935 in Calcutta and raised in Amritsar, Khanum was steeped in the rich cultural and musical traditions of the region from a young age. As a child prodigy, she received her initial musical education from her sister Mukhtar Begum, a notable singer of her time, and later from Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan of the Patiala Gharana, who honed her skills in classical forms such as Thumri, Dadra, and Ghazal.

Khnum's illustrious career spans several decades, during which she has captured hearts with her deeply emotive performances and velvety voice that breathes life into every couplet she renders. Her singing style, characterized by its soulful nuance and controlled virtuosity, has made timeless classics of pieces like "Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo" and "Woh Ishq Jo Humse Rooth Gaya". Farida Khanum's contribution to the world of Ghazal singing has not only earned her numerous accolades, including the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan's second-highest civilian award, but also secured her place as a cultural ambassador of Pakistan. Her legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians and Ghazal connoisseurs around the globe as evident in numerous compilations, including the expansive "The Definitive Collection" series, which showcases her vast repertoire and unparalleled artistry.
