Samuel A. Ward was an American organist and composer who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He's best known for composing the melody to "America the Beautiful," one of the most beloved patriotic songs in the United States. Ward originally wrote the tune in 1882, titling it "Materna," and it was later paired with Katharine Lee Bates' poem "America the Beautiful" in 1910. Though Ward didn't live to see the popularity of this pairing (he died in 1903), his melody has become an enduring part of American musical culture.
