Senyawa

Senyawa is an experimental music duo hailing from the culturally-rich landscapes of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Formed in 2010, the outfit comprises Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi, artists who have carved out a distinctive niche in the global music scene with their avant-garde fusion of traditional Indonesian instrumentation and contemporary experimental music practices. Shabara's extended vocal techniques, ranging from throat singing to stage-commanding yelps, blend with Suryadi's mastery of custom-crafted instruments—most notably the "Bamboo Spear," an innovative string instrument made from bamboo.

The duo's work explores the spaces between the ritualistic and the industrial, the ancestral and the avant-garde, the local and the global. Senyawa's discography, which includes releases such as "Alkisah" and its numerous remixed iterations like "Alkisah Versi Hitam," "Alkisah Dikisahkan," and various international remix compilations, broadcasts a radical narrative of musical storytelling. Their approach to distribution is also innovative; they decentralized the release of "Alkisah," allowing multiple labels around the world to co-release the album, each offering their own unique take on the material.
