Psychedelic Folk

Psychedelic folk is a genre characterized by its eclectic blend of traditional folk instrumentation, such as acoustic guitars and flutes, with experimental and psychedelic elements like trippy soundscapes, tape loops, and Eastern instrumentation. Emerging in the 1960s, it evolved from the folk revival movement, as artists began to incorporate countercultural and avant-garde influences into their music. The genre's heyday was during the late 1960s and early 1970s, when it became a staple of the underground folk scene. Psychedelic folk's cultural significance lies in its reflection of the era's social and philosophical upheaval, as well as its innovative fusion of traditional and experimental sounds. Unlike more traditional folk, psychedelic folk often features unconventional song structures, introspective and poetic lyrics, and a dreamy, atmospheric quality. This genre's unique blend of earthy and cosmic elements sets it apart from other folk styles, and its influence can be seen in later genres like indie folk and acid folk.
