Experimental Folk

Experimental folk is a genre characterized by its avant-garde approach to traditional folk music, often incorporating unconventional instrumentation, atmospheric soundscapes, and introspective lyrics. Emerging in the 1960s counterculture movement, experimental folk evolved through the 1990s lo-fi scene and continues to thrive today. This genre is marked by its use of DIY production, found sounds, and extended techniques on traditional instruments, creating a dreamlike, introspective atmosphere. Artists within this genre often draw from psychedelic rock, ambient, and noise influences, pushing the boundaries of folk music's narrative and sonic conventions. The result is a distinctive sound that is both introspective and expansive, often exploring themes of nature, identity, and social commentary.
