Unrest was an influential indie rock band from Washington, D.C., formed in the mid-1980s by high school friends Mark Robinson and Phil Krauth. Known for their genre-blending sound that drew from post-punk, pop, and experimental rock, Unrest became a cornerstone act of the independent music scene during the early 1990s. The band's lineup solidified with the addition of bassist Bridget Cross, and together they crafted a distinctive style marked by catchy melodies, jangly guitars, and occasional noise-pop detours.
Their 1993 album Perfect Teeth, released on the iconic 4AD label, is often cited as a high point in their discography and remains a fan favorite. Other essential releases include B.P.M. (1991-1994), a collection of singles and rarities, and the EP Cath Carroll, named after the British music journalist and musician. Although Unrest disbanded in the mid-1990s, their music continues to resonate with fans of the '90s indie underground and has influenced countless indie and lo-fi acts that followed.
