François Rabbath

François Rabbath is a legendary double bassist and composer, widely renowned for redefining the role of the double bass in classical and solo performance. Born in Syria in 1931 and raised in Lebanon, Rabbath later moved to Paris, where he began captivating audiences with his virtuosic playing and unique approach to the instrument. Unlike many classical double bassists of his time, Rabbath developed a highly expressive solo style, drawing from his Middle Eastern roots and classical Western traditions.

He’s also an influential educator: his innovative method of bass pedagogy revolutionized how the instrument is taught, incorporating new fingering systems that expanded its technical possibilities. Over the decades, Rabbath has released numerous recordings spanning original compositions, classical repertoire—including a celebrated interpretation of Bach’s Cello Suites on double bass—and traditional music from his heritage. His contributions have left a lasting mark on both classical and contemporary double bass playing.
