Antonio Lauro was a Venezuelan guitarist and composer, widely celebrated for his beautiful and expressive works for the classical guitar. Born in 1917, Lauro combined elements of traditional Venezuelan music with classical technique, creating a unique and captivating style. His most well-known pieces are his series of Venezuelan waltzes, such as “Natalia,” “El Negrito,” and “El Marabino,” which have become staples in the classical guitar repertoire and are beloved by guitarists around the world.
Originally trained as a pianist, Lauro turned to the guitar after being inspired by the performances of Agustín Barrios Mangoré. He studied composition formally at the Academia de Música y Declamación in Caracas and was both a prolific performer and educator throughout his life. Lauro's contributions to guitar music have helped elevate the instrument’s status in the classical world, and his music continues to be performed and recorded by guitarists across generations.
