Broadcast was an English indie electronic band, formed in Birmingham in 1995 by Trish Keenan (vocals, keyboards) and James Cargill (bass). Throughout its existence, Broadcast's sound remained rooted in 1960s psychedelia and the avant-pop of The United States of America, yet they also delved into the territory of library music, incorporating samples and a wide array of analog electronics. Their music is characterized by a blend of dreamy pop, minimalistic structures with Keenan's ethereal vocals, and often included elements of noise, drone, and folk.
The band's first album, "The Noise Made By People" (2000), received widespread critical acclaim, establishing their signature chilled, yet experimental style. As Broadcast continued to evolve with subsequent releases such as "Haha Sound" (2003) and "Tender Buttons" (2005), they garnered a loyal following for their ability to create beautifully crafted, otherworldly soundscapes. The band often experimented with the form and structure of their releases, as evidenced by the more eclectic collections such as "The Future Crayon" and "Mother Is The Milky Way." Their music took a haunting turn with the soundtrack "Berberian Sound Studio" (2013), further showcasing their penchant for eerie and atmospheric sounds. Tragically, Trish Keenan passed away in 2011, but her voice and the distinctive music of Broadcast continue to inspire and captivate listeners.
