Black was the stage name of the English singer-songwriter Colin Vearncombe (26 May 1962 – 26 January 2016), who enjoyed mainstream success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Primarily known for the 1987 single "Wonderful Life," which was a massive hit worldwide, Black's music was characterized by its smooth production, deep and introspective lyrics, and melodic sensibilities. He first emerged on the music scene with the release of the single "Human Features" in 1981. Following this, his debut album "Black" demonstrated his prowess as an up-and-coming artist.
Throughout his career, Black continued to evolve as a musician, releasing multiple albums like "Comedy" (1988) and "Are We Having Fun Yet?" (1993), with his style shifting from the synth-pop and new wave influences of his early years towards a more mature alternative rock feel. Later works such as "Between Two Churches" and "Any Colour You Like" reflected a deeper sophistication in his songwriting, often integrating acoustic elements and introspective themes. His ability to meld different styles became more evident in albums like "Water On Stone" and the electronic flavors presented in "Any Colour You Like (Deluxe Edition)." Black remained active up until his untimely death in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of lyrical poignancy and timeless musical innovation. His later releases, including EPs like "EP:I" and "EP: II," as well as live recordings such as "Live 2015," showcased an artist who had remained heartfelt and true to his artistic vision throughout his career.
