Igor Levit

Igor Levit, born in 1987 in Gorky, Soviet Union (now Nizhny Novgorod, Russia), is a classical pianist celebrated for his depth and intensity in performance. Levit moved to Germany with his family at the age of eight, where his prodigious talent in piano flourished under the tutelage of distinguished teachers. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover under the guidance of Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, Matti Raekallio, and Bernd Goetzke. Levit's international breakthrough came in 2005 when he won the Silver Medal at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition.

Igor Levit's career is marked by his wide-ranging repertoire and innovative programming, which spans across genres and epochs. Levit is particularly renowned for his interpretations of Beethoven's piano sonatas, having performed the complete cycle in concert series across Europe and recording the set to critical acclaim. His discography reflects a thoughtful engagement with both the core of the classical piano literature and works by contemporary composers. Albums like "On DSCH" showcase Levit's profound interest in music as a means of political and social commentary, while his performances and recordings of works like Beethoven’s "Ode to Joy" and arrangements of songs by bands like Metallica ("Nothing Else Matters") display his versatility and willingness to explore the intersections of classical music with broader cultural movements. An artist unafraid to express his opinions outside the concert hall, Levit has also emerged as a vocal advocate for human rights and political causes, underscoring the relevance and responsibility of artists in society.
