Saffire-The Uppity Blues Women

Saffire–The Uppity Blues Women was an exuberant three-woman acoustic blues group that brought a fresh perspective to the genre by blending traditional blues sounds with contemporary issues and sassy wit. Originating from Fredericksburg, Virginia, the group was formed in 1984 and consisted of Ann Rabson (vocals, guitar, and piano), Gaye Adegbalola (vocals, guitar, and harmonica), and Andra Faye McIntosh (vocals, violin, mandolin, and bass) who joined in 1992. They were known for their bold and humorous songwriting that tackled topics such as romance, societal expectations, and gender stereotypes.

Over the course of their career, Saffire–The Uppity Blues Women released several albums that resonated with audiences for their authenticity and joyful, confrontational spirit. Albums such as "Havin' The Last Word" and "Ain't Gonna Hush!" showcased their musical prowess and ability to connect with fans across diverse backgrounds. The group garnered a loyal following and received critical acclaim for their revitalization of blues through a feminist lens. In February 2009, they announced their decision to retire, and their final album, "Havin' The Last Word", served as a celebratory farewell to their fans, affirming their lasting influence on the blues genre. Their legacy is encapsulated in their dedication to the blues and the empowerment of women in the music industry.
